Vizzini “dizzying intellect” ultimately leads to his demise and all his reasoning, wit and deception were no match for the brave and dashing Westley. He breaks down all of his known information: the fact that Westley has beaten two of his previous companions, his criminal background from Australia, and the fact that Westley is intelligent. He is using reasoning and deception to figure out which chalice has the deadly iocane powder. Vizzini is using all of his possible argument tactics to uncover the truth. Dialectics is defined as a method of discussion and reasoning through dialogue to complete an intellectual investigation (as defined by Merriam- Websters). The pair are using wit and reasoning to break down the situation and decipher the mystery of who will die from the dangerous iocane powder. It is the dialectic method, founded by Socrates, which outlines that the most precise method of attaining reliable knowledge is through disciplined conversation (Stumpf, 1994). Platos writings are almost entirely in the form of dialogues or conversations between Socrates and others. Modern forms of social media (e.g., Facebook) are more likely to host dialogic conversations than past social networks (e.g., newsgroups). But there is one scene that always sticks out in my mind. Dialectical thinking refers to the ability to view issues from multiple perspectives and to arrive at the most economical and reasonable reconciliation of seemingly contradictory information and postures. Now I don’t know whether or not this is legal for someone to do this but I decided to stray away from the weekly rhetoric blog post and talk about one of my favorite movie scenes and how it is using a different form of arguments. Dialectical thinking has values for education that have been largely overlooked by researchers and educators.
